CLOSURE OF AUSTRALIA POST AT CANELAND SPARKS COMMUNITY CONCERNS

The closure of the Mackay Caneland Post Shop has left local residents dismayed, with many raising concerns about the loss of this essential service.

Australia Post advised Federal Member for Dawson and Shadow Assistant Minister for Manufacturing and Sovereign Capability Andrew Willcox, the branch will close its doors on 18 July, without providing any explanation.

Locals say the closure will significantly impact their daily life, with elderly residents and those without digital access being the most affected. Small businesses within the centre who rely on these postal services will also be inconvenienced.

“This decision is a blow to the town’s connectivity.” Mr Willcox said.

“This is more than just a post office, it’s a vital service for the community of Mackay and surrounds. For many locals, especially older residents and those who are living with a disability, it’s their only practical way to access mail, pay bills, and stay connected. People use this service while attending to other requirements within the shopping centre, lessens the need to travel across town.”

“My office has received many phone calls and emails from constituents raising serious concerns about this announcement by Australia Post.”

“Once again our regional community is being shortchanged on basic services, and that’s just unacceptable.”
